The University of Cyprus (UCY) is the host institution of the KIOS CoE. UCY is a young university, established in 1989 as the first university in Cyprus with the aim to become a leading educational and research institution, distinguishing itself internationally through the promotion of scholarship and being recognised as an institution of excellence in the Mediterranean region. The main objectives of UCY are twofold: the promotion of scholarship and education through teaching and research, and the enhancement of the cultural, social, and economic development of Cyprus. The most recently founded schools of UCY are the School of Engineering (founded in 2003) and the School of Medicine (founded in 2013). While a relatively young university with 7,000 students and nearly 1,000 employees (academic and administrative), UCY has many accomplishments to show over a very short period of time. Apart from being the leading university and the most active research institution in Cyprus (according to the most recent European Research Rankings), UCY is the youngest institution to be ranked in the top 550 Higher Education Institutions in the world (placed in the 351-400 group for 2015-2016 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings). Furthermore, UCY has been recently ranked 55th worldwide in the “150 Under 50 Rankings” of the top 150 universities under 50 years old (THE World University Rankings). UCY is committed to excellence across all its academic and administrative entities, and is one of the few organizations in Cyprus holding the EFQM “Committed to Excellence” Award and acknowledged with the “HR Excellence in Research” logo. Furthermore, it currently delivers up to 350 externally funded research projects, including several FP7 and H2020 projects, and 10 ERC Grants, as well as national and regional research programmes funded by the National Research Promotion Foundation and the European Structural Funds. UCY holds two of the three ERC Advanced Grants awarded to researchers in Cyprus, one of which was awarded to the KIOS CoE coordinator, Professor Marios Polycarpou.

Consistently rated amongst the world’s best universities, Imperial College London (Imperial) is a science-based institution with a reputation for excellence in research and education. Imperial is one of the world’s leading Universities, e.g., ranked no. 2 worldwide according to the QS World University Rankings for 2014-15. Imperial participates in this project with the Control and Power Group of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the Institute for Security Science and Technology, and Imperial’s Enterprise Division. Furthermore, the Imperial Business School will also be involved in various activities of the project.

Imperial’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering conducts internationally leading research, and delivers high-quality teaching. The department conducts research across a wide range of topics, and targets both fundamental advances and practical applications of science and technology. The quality and impact of its research are demonstrated by its many highly cited publications, the personal recognition of its researchers through awards and honours, and the commercial adoption of its results and innovations.

The Control and Power Research Group of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering draws on the strong tradition of control research at Imperial and is internationally acknowledged for its pioneering contributions to robust multivariable design, computer-aided control systems design, optimal control, stochastic control, electronic power conversion, and for its continuing contributions to robust control, optimization, nonlinear control, control of distributed parameters systems, and modelling and control of power systems. The Control and Power Research Group has an excellent track record in publications and has a substantial portfolio of grants. The Group has a solid track record on technology transfer and industrial collaborations (BAE Systems, ABB, IBM, UTRC, Philips, Danieli, Areva, National Grid Transco, Rolls Royce, among others). They also work closely with leading industrial partners such as National Grid, UK Power Networks, Alstom and many others. The Group leads several large multi-university collaborations.

The Institute for Security Science and Technology (ISST) was founded in 2008 as one of four Imperial College Global Institutes. Each Institute has been formed to promote interdisciplinary work to meet the greatest challenges faced by society, to become a focal point for multidisciplinary activities and an interface to stakeholders, and to formulate and apply new areas of knowledge and technology solutions as well as provide independent scientific advice. Individuals, communities, businesses, and government are facing rapidly evolving security challenges in many aspects of everyday life due to advances in technology, globalisation, and living in a more interconnected world. The Institute seeks to improve security and resilience across a range of scales, from protecting the individual to ensuring the security of entire populations. Its core mission areas include security in cyberspace, CBRN threat reduction, critical infrastructure protection, and bio and environmental security. ISST leads the UK National Cyber Security Programme that identifies the cyber threats to critical infrastructures as one of the main areas of concern.

The Teaming project and Imperial’s participation is supported by the involvement of the Enterprise Division, which is Imperial’s department dedicated to developing commercial and industrial partnerships, business ventures, major new collaborations and research consortia, as well as managing the delivery of research projects. The Division includes a number of core capabilities, including the Research Project Management Office (RPM), Industry Partnerships and Commercialisation team (IPC), Enterprise Ventures team, Corporate Partnerships team, and Enterprise Lab team. The RPM Office within this division is responsible for programme and consortium management as a service to academic-led initiatives such as EU Horizon 2020 projects, joint industry projects, international collaborative projects, research centre formation and operation. The main aim of IPC is to maximise the impact of Imperial’s academic discoveries by stimulating, identifying, managing and progressing opportunities to develop research and technologies through collaboration and commercialisation.The Enterprise Ventures team is responsible for conducting business planning and commercial strategy development for major new initiatives across Imperial. The Corporate Partnerships team provides focused resources to engage with industrial partners and design the optimal partnership to meet industrial needs and deliver value for academic researchers. The Enterprise Lab team supports student entrepreneurship activities and the Althea-Imperial programme, which is a professional development scheme aimed at women studying at Imperial.

Imperial is an integral component to the KIOS CoE. This enables its active and strong involvement in all aspects of the KIOS CoE operations ensuring a successful path to scientific excellence, innovation, and societal impact across Cyprus and Europe. More specifically, the Imperial team has key posts in the organization structure of the Centre and participates in the KIOS CoE Executive Committee with the Deputy Director, an Education Associate Director, Associate Directors of Research for CIS management and security studies, and an Innovation Associate Director. These posts provide the Imperial team with the mechanisms to actively and continuously engage in the steering and implementation of the KIOS CoE activities during the Teaming project duration as well as beyond the project’s lifetime.
